The Texas Medical Center is the largest employer in Houston with 106,000 employees; about 11 percent live in northern Brazoria County and southwestern Harris County. With 1,345 acres, the Texas Medical Center (TMC) is the eighth-largest business district in the country. This internationally recognized community is home to many of the nation’s best hospitals, physicians, researchers, educational institutions and health care providers. The Texas Medical Center consists of dozens of hospitals and clinics equipped to provide quality family health care, cardiac care, cancer therapy, trauma care, sports medicine, MRI, Life Flight and innovative treatments in hundreds of specialties.

With more than 7.2 million patients visits a year the TMC offers the largest concentration of medical services in the world. TMC can boast 21 renowned hospitals, eight specialty institutions, eight academic and research institutions, six nursing programs, four medical schools, schools of dentistry, public health, and pharmacy. Affiliated medical schools include the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston,Baylor College of Medicine, Texas A&M College of Medicine, and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Founded in 1945, the Texas Medical Center has functioned much like a municipal government, enforcing covenants and restrictions, coordinating activities among member institutions and maintaining the infrastructure. Today, TMC institutions are developing a shared vision that will focus on five key areas of importance in the 21st century. Design teams, each comprised of leaders from member institutions focused on Clinical Research, Genomics, Health Policy, Innovation, and Regenerative Medicine, are planning the future growth of the Texas Medical Center.
