Pearland Independent School District boasted 100 percent of its schools earning A’s and B’s in the recently-released Children at Risk 2017 rankings.

Of the 20 district campuses ranked, 18 received an A ranking — making Pearland ISD the largest Houston-area district with only A and B scores.

In addition, the district boasted 12 schools among the top 100 in the Houston area for their grade level.

Pearland ISD is located in northern Brazoria County in Houston’s fastest growing suburb, with more that 20,400 students and 23 campuses.

Superintendent Dr. John Kelly attributes the district’s success to a focus on the whole child.

“We are extremely proud of the work our faculty and staff day in and day out. These rankings reflect their efforts to meet the needs of every child both in and outside the classroom. We not only strive to provide a world-class education, but also world-class care.” Kelly said.

School Rankings Methodology

This year, Children at Risk ranked 1,383 public school — 879 elementary schools, 317 intermediate schools and 187 high schools — in the eight-county Houston area.

Children at Risk examined these areas to determine rankings:

  • Student Achievement Index– Performance on 2016 STAAR reading and math tests
  • Campus Performance Index – An achievement adjustment to eliminate bias toward campuses with fewer economically-disadvantaged students
  • Growth Index– Improvement from 2015-16 on standardized test scores in reading, English, and math
  • College Readiness Index (high schools only)– Graduation rates, SAT/ACT participation rate and scores, and AP/IB participation rate and scores

“A” grades were for schools at or above the 75th percentile, while “B” grades were for those at or above the 55th percentile.

Pearland High School, Turner College and Career High School and PACE Center were excluded from this year’s rankings – Texas Education Agency reported incomplete data causing PHS’s exclusion, while being a newer school kept TCCHS off the list and PACE, being an alternative campus, was not ranked.

A Houston-based nonprofit organization, Children at Risk has evaluated all Texas public schools since 2009, using the most recent data from TEA.
