The Pee Wee Bowen Band brought the 2015 Alvin Live Summer Concert Series to a close on August 13 with a sold out crowd at the K-219 studio. Proceeds from the series benefits ACC Communications department with scholarships and equipment.

Alvin Community College Prepares for Fall 2015 Semester

Alvin Community College students and staff are gearing up for the fall 2015 semester. Registration for the 2015-16 fall semester is now open and will end on August 12. Late registration will be August 13-24.Students are encouraged to enroll early to ensure their spot in the classes they need.

Classes will begin on August 24. The deadline to make tuition payments or set up an installment plan for the 16-week and first 8-week mini semester is at 5 p.m. on August 12 or at midnight to pay online.

The Pee Wee Bowen Band will close out the Alvin Live Summer Concert Series on August 13 at the K-219 studio. Pee Wee Bowen is a local, classic rock group that performs at several venues. Pee Wee Bowen has been singing and playing for more than 50 years in the Houston area.

               The Summer Concert Series is sponsored by the Alvin Community College Foundation. Funds raised from Alvin Live performances are used for ACC Broadcast Communications student training and scholarships.

Alvin Community College Offers Mexican American History Courses, 2015 Registration Underway

In order to provide students an in-depth look at the influence of Mexican Americans in our region, Alvin Community College will begin offering courses in Mexican American History.

               “Students will finish the courses with a new appreciation about the ways in which Hispanic peoples and cultures influenced the U.S. as it is today,” History instructor Andrew Pegoda said.

Alvin Community College Baseball Team Seeks Sponsors

The Alvin Community College baseball team is now seeking sponsors for billboard space along the Phillips Field fence. All of the proceeds from the sponsorships will go directly towards student scholarships as well as facility improvements.

               Businesses and organizations can post a four-foot by eight-foot sign on the fence for $750 a year. The deadline to purchase a sign sponsorship is August 15.

               The baseball team closed out its season in the NJCAA Region 14 Tournament with a 41-15 record for back-to-back 40-win seasons.

Alvin Community College ~ Radney Foster Performs Alvin Live

Country Music star Radney Foster performed to a packed K-219 Studio during the Alvin Live Summer Concert Series on July 9.

               Foster belted out his hits including Just Call Me Lonesome and Nobody Wins while also performing songs from his latest album, Everything I Should Have Said. He performed with Nashville guitarist Eddie Heinzelman.

               Local music talent Tommy Lewis opened the concert prior to Foster taking the stage.

Foster also visited with fans and signed autographs after the concert.

Alvin Community College Foundation Receives Grant for Scholarships

 Alvin Community College received a $5,000 grant from the Texas New Mexico Power’s inaugural Power Grant program to fund $500 scholarships for 10 students with financial needs. The grants will help students to complete workforce training and begin job interviews in their chosen industries.

               "The scholarships are an invaluable resource to the students who will receive them," said Wendy Del Bello, executive director of the ACC Foundation. "Without the funds, the students would not be able to attend college and pursue a career through our work force training programs."

Alvin Community College Student Pioneers Sickle Cell Diagnosis

Alvin, TX ~ When his young niece was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Anemia, Alvin Community College student Bertrand Ebang wanted to learn more about and how to treat the desease.

Ebang, a native of Bourdeaux, France, began working on an Honors project that centered on diagnosis and treatment of Sickle Cell Anemia using ultrasound technology. Ebang’s project won first place at the Gulf Coast Intercollegiate Symposium competition at College of the Mainland on April 24.

The Alvin Community College Fine Arts Gallery is hosting an exhibit by ACC student Emma Jimenez. The exhibit includes ceramics and other works of mixed media.

Emma’s work reflects the simplicity of nature as seen by her from early childhood to the present. Her current sensibility has been developed from youth by the forces of nature and by the influence of human beings on nature. Emma’s creatures, insects and plants have existed on earth for millions of years.

Alvin Community College Hosts Rock and En-Roll, Sat, July 11

For students who work and may not have time to test, register or apply for Financial Aid for college during the week, Alvin Community College is hosting Rock and En-Roll on Saturday, July 11.

ACC staff members will be at the college from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Enrollment Services Center to provide help for those wanting to take courses in the fall.  Registration is now open for fall and will close on August 12. Classes for fall will begin on August 24.
