Alvin Community College Nursing Students Utilize Simulation Equipment

One of the most important training tools for those pursuing a career in nursing is patient simulators.

               Clinical simulation is being used more often in the academic environment to provide students learning opportunities that may not be available in the hospital setting,” said Dr. Debbi Fontenot, director of Associate Degree Nursing at Alvin Community College. “According to a recent study conducted by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, up to 50 percent of clinical time can be spent in a simulation environment and have positive outcomes.”

Alvin Community College Police Issue Challenge Coins

Hoping to make life on the Alvin Community College better, the college police department will begin awarding “Challenge Coins” to students and staff members for actions that improve campus life. The coins contain the emblems of the ACC Police Department and the ACC seal.

“Each officer, if they see someone doing something good on campus, will stop them and issue a coin,” Police Chief Ike Hamrick said.

Alvin Community College Students Benefit from Reverse Transfer System

Many times students transfer from a community college to a four-year institution to seek a Bachelor’s Degree without receiving their Associate’s Degree.

               “Students who transfer before completing the associate degree deprive the college of being able to count them in their graduation rates,” Alvin Community College Dean of Students JoAn Anderson said. “The payoff is highest for students pursuing a bachelor’s degree when they can document their achievement at the half-way mark with an associate’s degree.”

Alvin Community College Ranked Among Top Colleges in U.S.

Alvin Community College was again ranked among the best community colleges in the country according to data compiled by a financial services firm. The website WalletHub, recently ranked ACC number 24 among 670 community colleges throughout the country. ACC was ranked the first among community colleges in Texas.

The site based their rankings on 17 different aspects including tuition cost, career outcome, classroom experience, student to faculty ratio, student loan data and education outcomes.

Alvin Community College Observatory Hosts Lunar Eclipse Viewing

Alvin Community College will host a viewing of an upcoming lunar eclipse on Sunday, September 27 at the college observatory. There will be six to eight telescopes set up around the observatory for stargazers to get a glimpse of the moon from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Parking will be available by the Science/Health Science Building of Mustang Road.

Alvin Community College Introduces 2015-16 Drama Season

Getting a lawyer to the altar, a comical murder mystery and the adventures of a couple of amphibians fill out a packed lineup for the Alvin Community College Drama Department’s 2015-16 season.

               “The 2015-16 season is about fun,” Drama Chair Dr. Jay Burton said. “Some years we do serious plays or poignant plays, but this year we are concentrating of putting some fun on stage. We are hoping that everyone will come by and join the good times.”

Alvin Community College Foundation to Host 16th Annual Christmas Gala

Alvin Community College will lay out the red carpet for An Evening of Elegance during the 16th Annual ACC Foundation Gala. The event benefits ACC student scholarships.

               The Foundation will host the Gala on November 20 at 6 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Manvel. Dress for the event will be semi-formal.

Alvin Community College Regents Approve 2015-16 Tax Rate

The Alvin Community College Board of Regents approved the 2015-16 tax rate during their board meeting on August 27. The rate for the next fiscal year is 20.4 cents per $100 of property value, which is the current rate. The rate includes 18.29 cents for Maintenance and Operations while 2.1 cents will go towards voter-approved debt.

               In other action, the board voted to extend the contract of President Dr. Christal M. Albrecht for an additional year for a total three-year term to 2018.

Alvin Community College Observatory Hosts Open House, Aug 28

Alvin Community College will give the public a chance to stargaze at an open house at the Observatory on Friday, August 28 from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. The Observatory opened in 2010 and was part of the 19.9 million bond issue approved by voters in 2005.

“We are planning to observe the Moon and Saturn, weather permitting,” Physics instructor Dr. Joseph Mills said.
