Alvin Community College Receives Grant for Industry Training

The Alvin Community College Continuing Education/Workforce Development Division received a $1.4 million grant from the Texas Workforce Commission Skills Development Fund to provide training to local industry firms.

               The grant will train 579 employees working for INEOS and Team Industrial Services. The training includes courses in industrial safety, equipment repair/maintenance, plant processes and related technical applications of plant operations.

Alvin Community College Calls Bond Election, May 7

The Alvin Community College Board of Regents voted 8-1 on February 18 to call an $88.5 million bond proposition on the ballot for the May 7 elections; early voting will be April 25 to May 3.

               If approved by voters, the bond would provide funding for a new technical building, and campus facility improvements at the Alvin location and the land purchase and construction of a new building to serve the west side of the College’s taxing area.

Alvin Community College Student Named to All State Band

Karenmaria Oswalt started playing flute but when she became a sophomore in high school, she decided to put it down. After taking some courses in college to pursue a music degree, she started to play again and rediscovered how much she loved playing.

               Oswalt, of Missouri City, was recently named to the Texas Community College All State Band. She performed recently in the All State Band Concert in San Antonio.

Alvin Community College and Alvin ISD Announce Science Fair Winners

More than 70 Alvin Independent School District high school and junior high students participated in the 21st Annual Alvin Science Fair at the Alvin Community College Gym on Feb. 11.

During the science fair, students competed in individual and team categories: Science Product Showcase, Health and Medicine, Physics, Earth and Space, Botany & Environmental, Chemistry, Life Science Team and Physical Science Team.

Alvin Community College Dancers Cut a Rug to Kurland Street Band

Dancers took to the floor for Alvin Community College Music students during the Evening of Big Band Music on Saturday, February 6. The Big Swing Jazz Orchestra performed at the Nolan Ryan Center. Proceeds from the concert go directly to the Music Department and alumni scholarships. Attendees also helped support the purchase of a new tuba for students.

Alvin Community College Court Reporting Students Post 100 Percent Pass Rate

All five students from the Alvin Community College Court Reporting program who took the recent license exam from the Texas Court Reporters Certification Board passed the test for a 100 percent pass rate.

Only 24 students in Texas took the exam with 14 passing. ACC routinely posts among the highest pass rates in the state, instructors said. ACC students who received their license include Amy Caillouet, of Alvin; Haleigh Nava, of Spring; Michelle Rodriguez, of Houston; Joanna Sagastisado, of Houston and Ehdi Sepulveda, of Katy.

Alvin Community College Announces Fall 2015 Dean's List

Alvin Community College recognized students for making the Fall 2015 Dean’s List during a recent reception. To be eligible for the list students must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average for 12 or more credit hours in a semester and no course with a grade lower than a C.

“I am honored to recognize this semester’s recipients for their hard work and perseverance in the classroom,” ACC President Dr. Christal M. Albrecht told the students. “It takes a significant amount of dedication to achieve a spot on the Dean’s List and I congratulate you for your efforts.”

Alvin Community College Launches Strategic Plan

Educational institutions need a strategy in place to deal with change whether it’s population growth, legal adjustments or funding issues. Alvin Community College launched its 5-year strategic plan in an effort to prepare for its future as an educational provider.

               President Dr. Christal M. Albrecht said the strategic plan will address certain aspects of college operations in an effort to bring about improvements. “This is not just a plan, it’s a process. And it will be a great process for all of us to work together to move the college forward,” Albrecht said.

Jazz and swing dance enthusiasts take to the dance floor during the Alvin Community College Big Band Concert on February 6. The 17th Annual Evening of Big Band Music with the Alvin Community Band will start at 7 p.m. and last dance will be 10 p.m. at the Nolan Ryan Center. The Big Swing Jazz Orchestra will perform for the concert. Funds raised at the event will go directly to the Music Department and alumni scholarships.

Alvin Community College Foundation Hosts 16th Gala

Alvin Community College supporters danced, dined  and donated $52,000 to student scholarships and staff development at the recent 16th Annual Foundation Gala.

The Gala is the Foundation's biggest fundraiser and proceeds are used to establish several scholarships which are awarded to future and current ACC students. Fifty percent of all proceeds go directly to student scholarships.
