Alvin Community College Posts Near Record Enrollment for Fall

Alvin Community College had a near record number of students enroll for the 2016 fall semester. Preliminary enrollment for the fall was 5,674 with 940,648 contact hours compared to the previous fall when 5,116 students enrolled with 855,568 contact hours.

“We are very excited that our Fall 2016 enrollment was up over 550 students from the Fall 2015 enrollment,” President Dr. Christal M. Albrecht said. “This represents an 11 percent increase in enrollment. In addition, our contact hours, which represents how we are funded by the state, were up by 10 percent.”

The Alvin Community College baseball and softball teams will host the 11th annual Athletics Dinner and Auction fundraiser on Saturday, October 15 at the ACC Gym.

Proceeds from the barbecue dinner and auction will go towards scholarships, facility improvements and upgrades for player equipment. The silent and live auctions will include sports memorabilia from sports legends, tickets to area pro sports teams, gift baskets and more.

The silent auction will start early at 10 a.m. on October 15. Bidders can come to the gym and place bids before the event.

Alvin Community College Welcomes Libby Koch to Alvin Live

Country Music singer Libby Koch performed to a packed K-219 Studio during the July 14th Alvin Live Summer Concert Series at Alvin Community College. Beatle’s tribute band the Fab 5 will close out the series on August 11.

               Since 2011, the ACC Live series has used the studio setting for its productions on 89.7 FM and KACC-TV, Cable Access Channel 16. The studio can seat 65 guests. When it's not used for public and private events, ACC students work in K-219 to gain experience in television and radio broadcasting.

Alvin Community College Program Seeks Volunteers for Free Heart Scans

One of the most vital elements of receiving an education in a healthcare field is hands on-training. Students seeking a degree in Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonography (DCVS) at Alvin Community College are currently in need of volunteers to practice the skills they learn in class.

               The DCVS program, like other Allied Health programs, offers free screenings to the public in order to provide needed experience for students. All of the tests are non-invasive, pain-free and are supervised by a certified instructor.

Alvin Community College Regents Approve Budget Amendments

The Alvin Community College Board of Regents approved updates to the local board policies during their meeting on June 23.

Board members formed a subcommittee in November 2014 to review the policies and make the needed changes. The board held several workshops and worked with the Texas Association of School Boards to determine how best to make adjustments. The changes are required due to recent updates in state law,policy updates will be posted to the college’s website.

Alvin Community College Chosen to Participate in Second Chance Pell Program

Alvin Community College was named one of 67 American colleges and universities in the nation selected to participate in the Second Chance Pell pilot program, which will provide grant funds for prisoners seeking a higher education.

               "ACC is very excited to take part in this program," President Dr. Christal M. Albrecht said. "We were the first college in Texas to offer college courses to inmates. The Second Chance Pell Program will allow us to build on an already successful venture with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice."
