Alvin Community College to Recruit Houston Area Instructors

Alvin Community College will host an Adjunct Job Fair on June 24 to recruit part-time instructors for the college. The Fair will be held at the Nolan Ryan Center from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

There are several positions open to teach day, evening and weekends classes. Teaching formats may include the traditional classroom, online or hybrid.

The positions are available at various Brazoria County locations including the ACC main campus, UHCL Pearland Campus, Shadow Creek High School, Texas Department of Criminal Justice and several others.

Alvin Community College Has Record Dual Degree 2017 Grads

During a Alvin Community College Commencement ceremony a record number of Alvin, Manvel, Dawson and Turner high school students walked across the stage weeks ahead of getting their high school diplomas.

ACC had 131 students who successfully earned 60 hours of college coursework through participation in the Alvin Community College Dual Credit-Dual Degree program and completed their Associate Degree in General Studies.

As the heated political rhetoric in the country continues to intensify, it is important to learn how polarization occurs. Consolidation of the media, proliferation of false news and identity politics are a growing concern, according to Sam Jasek an Alvin Community College Honors student.

“This contributes to mistrust,” said Jasek, of League City.

Alvin Community College to Offer Classes This Fall at Shadow Creek High School, UHCL-Pearland in Pearland

Alvin Community College will offer courses starting this fall at two locations in Pearland. Classes will begin August 21 at Alvin ISD Shadow Creek High School on Broadway west of Texas 288, and the University of Houston-Clear Lake Pearland campus on Pearland Parkway. Registration for the fall semester is now open.

Alvin Community College Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Recognized as a Five-Star Chapter

The Mu Upsilon Chapter at Alvin Community College was recently honored as a Five-Star Chapter, the highest designation by Phi Theta Kappa for its community service projects as well as achievement for its students and advisors.

Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society of two-year colleges.  Members follow four hallmarks, including scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.  To be eligible for Phi Theta Kappa, students must have completed at least 12 college credit hours at ACC and maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or above.

Alvin Community College Student Named National Hispanic Scholar

Every year, millions of high school students sit down to take the SATs, an entrance exam required by most universities. Alvin Community College Upward Bound student Sofia Aguilar recently took the test and her 1340 score was one of the highest in the country for Hispanic students.

Out of 250,000 Hispanic students who took the SATs recently, Sofia Aguilar, a senior at Alvin High School, placed among the top 2 percent. She was named a National Hispanic Scholar for the distinction.

So far, Aguilar has received $20,000 in scholarships for her education pursuits.

Alvin Community College Process Tech Program Certified by NAPTA

As local petrochemical companies infuse billions of dollars into industry, Alvin Community College has recently been awarded a new certification for its Process Technology program.

The North American Process Technology Alliance (NAPTA) awarded the ACC program an endorsement for meeting the group’s standards for education. NAPTA is a consortium of colleges, educators and industrial leaders that work together to develop curriculums for process technology education.

Alvin Community College Hosts Amazing Race to College

Alvin Community College hosted students from area high schools during the Amazing Race to College event on March 30. High school students had an opportunity to learn more about the programs and degrees available at ACC while also playing fun activities and free food. More than 450 students participated in the event from Alvin, Manvel and Texas City high schools.Students also signed up to win one of six, $250 scholarships. Alvin Community College TDCJ Commencement

Achieving an education is an important milestone for any student that can help propel them into a career. But another important benefit to finishing a degree is providing inspiration to others, said Damion Guinn, an Alvin Community College graduate from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

“We encourage and strengthen those who we come into contact with,” Guinn said while giving a commencement address at the Stringfellow Unit on March 4.

Alvin Community College & Alvin Museum Society Partner to Use App Technology in Museum Tours

The Alvin Museum Society has teamed up with Alvin Community College to help history enthusiasts use their smart phones to learn more about the region.

In conjunction with the Lake Jackson Museum, an app was created that utilizes QR codes with OneCell technology. The app brings up written text and audio about a particular location or exhibit at the Alvin and Lake Jackson Museums.
