TIRR Memorial Hermann is holding a bike safety fair Saturday, August 29. The event will take place from 10 a.m. until noon at TIRR Memorial Hermann Pediatric Rehabilitation at the Kirby Glen Center, 2455 South Braeswood, Houston.
“More and more kids will be on their bikes heading to and from school,” says Ava Skrabanek, CTRS, MSRLS, therapeutic recreation specialist, TIRR Memorial Hermann. “This is the perfect time to talk about safety and make sure your bicycle is ready for the road.”
In addition to bicycle safety and maintenance demonstrations the event will also include face painting, games and other activities. Free bicycle helmets will be available for children 3-18 years old while supplies last.
“Wearing a helmet is a simple, easy act that can help prevent brain injuries,” says Ava Skrabanek, “We want people in the community to have access to helmets, even if they aren’t able to purchase one.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, helmets reduce the risk of bicycle-related head injury by about 80 percent. Yet only 15 percent of children use helmets all or most of the time while cycling.
