Pearland Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class Explores Area Social Services

Leadership Pearland is a national leadership program sponsored by the Pearland Chamber of Commerce with a mission to identify current successful men and women in the area and expand their involvement in community affairs and future leadership positions.

The 2017 Pearland Leadership Class visited several social services and non-profit organizations on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. The class received briefs and presentations from educational non-profits such as the Pearland ISD and Alvin ISD Education Foundations.

The Leadership class visited with the Adult Reading Center, Pearland Neighborhood Center, Christian Helping Hands, Pearland Lions Club, Pearland Rotary Club, Forgotten Angels, BACH Rehabilitation, UnBound, and the Vic Coppinger Family YMCA.

Although a few of the organizations operate independently, the efforts and collaboration between these organizations and community stakeholders allow our area to be successful. Gerrit Von Wenckstern, Leadership Class member - Memorial Hermann-Pearland, suggests that, "Partnerships between our businesses like Memorial Hermann and the Adult Reading Center allows us to assist the residents of northern Brazoria County in various aspects. The collaborative efforts are imperative to the success of the community".

Natalie Clogston, Chief Foundation Officer for the Pearland ISD Education Foundation, discussed how the foundation has provided over $137,000 in innovative teaching grants since its inception in 2014. Sheila Olson, Alvin ISD Education Foundation Executive Director, informed the group on the many opportunities they provide the Alvin School District and its students.

Leadership participant, Juaquinya Dent from the City of Pearland, states, "The education foundations and other non-profits in the area provide a valuable service to our community. Their dedication to our residents shows the commitment to our neighbors and our local region."

The Pearland Leadership Class is a 9-month course for nominated emerging leaders within the community. The 10 members of this year’s Leadership Pearland Class are immersed in various aspects of the community such as law enforcement, infrastructure, and social services. Their graduation luncheon is scheduled for June 7th.
