HCC celebrates Spring Branch with neighborhood's own Mayor Annise Parker

College commemorates impact on community with the help of social media

HOUSTON [May 2, 2014] - Houston Community College's Spring Branch campus is celebrating the completion of a year-long project spotlighting the community. Mayor Annise Parker and Councilwoman Brenda Stardig, who both grew up in Spring Branch, submitted photos for the unique social media campaign entitled 'Show Us Your Spring Branch.'

The campaign allowed proud Spring Branchers to post and send images through the college's social media platforms, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. In addition to images, the college used these platforms to ask for comments on what the community means and how HCC has helped in their journey.

Photos collected during the campaign were used to create a large collage wall that is a permanent fixture in a student area at the Spring Branch campus. Approximately 700 images were collected from the campaign's more than 200 participants.

Mayor Annise Parker and Councilwoman Brenda Stardig, along with a host of students, faculty, staff, business owners and community supporters will be at the unveiling of the collage wall.

HCC has provided educational opportunities to Spring Branch residents since 1986. By 2000, the demand for the community college campus had grown by so much that HCC purchased the building and property at I-10 and Beltway 8 West now known as the HCC Spring Branch campus. Close to 9,000 students attend this vibrant and diverse college.
