While Kassie Bowen worked hard every day to boost her batting average on the Alvin Community College softball team, she also worked to keep up her grade-point average in class.
Bowen, 20, of League City, was recognized for Exemplary Academic Achievement by the National Junior College Athletic Association. In the 2011-12 school year, Bowen maintained a 3.6 GPA.
The left fielder said she was surprised by the NJCAA academic achievement award and felt honored with the distinction. "It's worth the hard work and it wasn't easy," she said.
Head Coach Loryn Johnson said she was proud of Bowen's achievements as a student and an athlete.
"She was a constant leader for us in the classroom and on the field," Johnson said. "She led by example."
Bowen batted .298 and had a slugging percentage of .427 in the 2012 season. The softball team finished with a 24-20 record.
Bowen plans to move to Prairie View A & M next year to play for the softball team and finish a bachelor's degree in science. Eventually she will pursue a nursing degree, she said.
