Alvin resident Cornell DeWitt watches as Venus crosses over the sun through a solar telescope on June 5, 2012 at the ACC observatory. Natalie Olivarez, of Alvin, takes a look through a solar telescope of Venus passing by the sun.

Students, residents and astronomy enthusiasts gathered at the Alvin Community College Observatory on June 5 to catch a glimpse of the planet Venus passing in front of the sun. The next time Venus moves between the sun and Earth will be in 2117. ACC instructor Joseph Mills set up a solar telescope for viewers at the Observatory; a second telescope outfitted with a box projected the image of the event on a sheet of paper.
