Today, Mayor Tom Reid gave his 2012 Annual State of the City Address at the First United Methodist Church. With economic development on the rise and the crime rate down, Mayor Reid emphasized the need to continue to position Pearland for future growth. "Pearland has a lot to be proud of; our growth is something we should celebrate. However, we must continue to focus on the quality of life of our residents," said Mayor Reid. In front of more than 200 business, government and community leaders, Mayor Reid attributed Pearland's growth to early planning and smart growth decisions made by current/past City Council members and city staff, which made a positive difference in Pearland's ability to meet the challenges of a rapidly-growing city. "Pearland has planned for an adequate water supply and established an aggressive Capital Improvement Program that has prepared the city for growth," he said. During the speech, Mayor Reid also issued a "to-do" list for the coming yearthat included: * Continuing to work to make Pearland the city of the future with an emphasis on quality city services, quality of life and a small town atmosphere *Continuing a strong partnership with local, state, and national elected officials and organizations *Continuing to plan for museums, arts & entertainment facilities and quality of life amenities that are expected of a destination city *Continuing to manage tax dollars with careful planning of infrastructure and services to maintain as low a tax rate as possible Reid also highlighted transportation projects including an adaptive traffic signal improvement on 518 and a Metro Park and Ride facility that will be housed on a 15.2 acre site adjacent to State Highway 288. The facility is expected to be operational in late 2013.
