(Houston, TX) — The Methodist Willowbrook Breast Center now offers patients MRI-guided biopsy, an advanced method of obtaining samples from lesions that cannot be detected via mammogram or ultrasound.
According to the National Cancer Institute, 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Survival rates have steadily increased over the last two decades, due in part to technology that allows the cancer to be found and treated early.
One of those technologies is MRI-guided biopsy, which uses magnetic resonance images to guide a biopsy needle to the exact location of a suspicious lesion so that a sample can be removed and examined.
Dr. Tuenchit Khamapirad, Medical Director of the Breast Center, has a background that has made her uniquely skilled at detecting breast cancer. "When it comes to successfully fighting breast cancer," notes Dr. Khamapirad, "early detection and treatment are essential. MRI and MRI-guided breast biopsy can now be used in coordination with other diagnostic exams such as mammography and breast ultrasound to detect and diagnose cancers earlier."
"Today more of our patients are having breast MRIs to detect lesions that can't be seen on a mammogram," Dr. Khamapirad continues, "and this technology allows us to biopsy those abnormalities in a non-surgical way."
The combination of a 3 Tesla (3T) MRI scanner with computer-aided diagnosis and the skills of dedicated breast radiologists allows Methodist Willowbrook to offer patients a level of care that until recently was available only in the Texas Medical Center.
"The addition of MRI-guided biopsy to our services enhances our status as a comprehensive breast care center," says Breast Center Supervisor Diane Garcia, R.T. (R.M.). "From the time a patient walks out of her doctor's office with a mammogram order, we can provide everything she needs—from simple X-rays to surgery and beyond if needed—in a supportive, caring environment that's close to home."
"Our Breast Center is a shining example of the outstanding services we offer to the Willowbrook community with a focus on early detection," notes Methodist Willowbrook Hospital CEO Beryl Ramsey. "Ours is one of very few Breast Centers in the area to have a dedicated breast radiographer on staff, plus we have surgeons who excel in breast surgery as well as a wonderful Outpatient Cancer Center. It's all part of our commitment to providing women in Northwest Houston with access to the most advanced life-saving technology, in a compassionate environment right here in their community."
