Maged Amine MD, head of the cardiology at St. Luke's Hospital at The Vintage, had his abstract "Risk of Inappropriate Shocks" accepted by The Scientific Committee for Cardiostim 2012, during their 18th World Congress. This world-wide scientific Congress, held in Nice, France, focuses on cardiac electrophysiology and cardiac techniques and brings in over 5,500 attendees, including the most distinguished world-renowned experts in the field of cardiology. Since the last congress in 2010, there have been over a thousand abstracts submitted and only a select few were accepted for the Cardiostim 2012 Congress.

Since Dr. Amine began his study two years ago, approximately 1200 patients from three different centers, two in Houston and one in Philadelphia, were examined to determine whether recent technological advances in defibrillators affect the incidence of "false" shock therapies being deliver to patients with a high risk of sudden death. The results of the study showed that in spite of all the technical advancements made in the manufacturing of these expensive devices, approximately one-third of all the shocks administered were "false" or inappropriate. The impact of these results is important as there are growing concerns that the shocks administered are not harmless and inappropriate shocks could prove to be harmful to the patient. It also supports the concern that despite all the expensive technical advancements made to this product, the product has not become a smarter or safer product.

Dr. Amine's findings will be presented for peer review by world-renown cardiologists in session #96 of Cardiostim this June. This peer review will determine whether or not his publication will be published through Cardiostim.
