The Santa Fe School District serves approximately 4,500 students on six different campuses. With an eye toward respect for tradition, all of the buildings have been remodeled or renovated over the years instead of being replaced. These older buildings are augmented by a state of the art 250,000 square foot high school located on Texas 6 two miles west of the downtown area. The school was opened in 2000. The Junior High was named by Texas Monthly magazine as one of the top 200 middle schools in 2006.

Santa Fe ISD offers a complete and coordinated K-12 program of gifted and talented services. The fine arts department is expanding yearly at both the junior high and high school levels. The High School offers an array of Advanced Placement courses, is a member of the Collegiate High School offered through College of the Mainland, provides duel credit courses for college credit, and has an active career and technology department.

The Santa Fe Board is currently studying the prospects of a bond proposal to address facility needs and technology upgrades to accommodate the almost 3,000 homes that are currently platted within the 66 square miles that make up the school boundaries.
