Only minutes from downtown Houston, the nation's second largest port, the world famous Texas Medical Center and Hobby Airport, Pearland is the fastest growing suburb in the Houston area (Forbes, July 07). To continue to provide residents with lifestyle quality, the city is working on numerous projects targeting thoroughfares, drainage, public safety, a library expansion, parks and recreation facilities, including walking trails and a Natatorium. Pearland Town Center at Texas 288 and FM 518/Broadway offers more than 100 shops, restaurants and businesses. The WaterLights District, a mix-used development on Texas 288 south of Sam Houston Parkway, will be home to Presidential Park and Nano Word Headquarters.
There are more than 30 churches in Pearland representing most denominations and spiritual interests, including The Sri Meenakshi Temple, one of only two Hindu temples in the Houston area.
The University of Houston has broken ground for a satellite campus on 100 acres at the intersection of Pearland Parkway and McHard Road. Pearland Parkway has direct access to the Sam Houston Parkway and is less than 5 minutes from Interstate-45. The Parks at Boulder Creek is adding more than 1.5 million square feet of retail including a new Best Buy and Specs.
City Hall, Independence Park, the main library, post office, police and fire stations are located east of Pearland Parkway off Liberty Drive. The Pearland Chamber of Commerce, one of the largest chambers in the greater Houston area, is moving to a new facility in the spring of 2009. Stella Roberts Recycling Center is in the Southwest Environment Center on Harkey Road in the West Oaks area.
