The Klein Independent School District covers 87.5 square miles of north Harris County. The center of the district is 40 minutes from Downtown Houston. Approximately 127,000 persons reside in the school district, which was initially settled in 1849 by German immigrants. The Klein ISD is comprised of 4 high schools, 8 intermediate schools, and 25 elementary schools.
Klein ISD provides the appropriate grade level curriculum that ensures students the maximum opportunity to attain identifiable educational goals.
District programs, which are broad and balanced in both scope and sequence, include a wide array of courses, each focusing on instruction in the essential elements or basic skills outlined in the Texas State Board of Education curriculum development guidelines.
Designing a balanced instructional program for Klein's more than 36,700 students requires a team effort on the part of district personnel. The associate superintendent and instructional staff are responsible for developing the curriculum across the district. In addition, this instructional staff serves as consultants to school principals who monitor and maintain curricular programs in the individual schools.
Over half of the students in the district receive special services, including bilingual and English as a second language services, career and technology courses, gifted and talented services, special education services, and Title One benefits.
Vocational training opportunities, available at the high school campuses, offer the following programs: Agriculture Science and Technology, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, Technology Education, Marketing Education, Business Education, Trade and Industrial Education, Health Science Technology Education, and Career and Orientation Education. The elementary academically able/gifted program and the secondary honors/gifted/AP/IB program extend the use of creative strategies and processes in problem solving as well as enrich, provide greater depth, and expand the essential knowledge and skills of the regular program. All Klein ISD campuses offer the academically able/honors/gifted and talented program.
The Klein district's individual school ratings are as follows: 2 schools are "Exemplary," 14 schools are "Recognized," and 18 schools are "Academically Acceptable." Klein ISD teachers have won both local and national recognition for teaching excellence, and over 30% of these teachers hold masters degrees.
