“Success for all students” is the goal of Goose Creek CISD, which serves over 20,000 students in the communities of Baytown and Highlands.  Encompassing a 128-square mile area, GCCISD has 22 campuses as well as a wide range of special programs and services, including Stuart Career Center, the School Community Guidance Center, and the Alternative Learning Program.

GCCISD students benefit from a strong, high quality educational system enhanced by outstanding community support.  The Victoria Walker Elementary School opened in the fall of 2007 and was made possible the approval of $220.5 million in bonds.  The bond issue also included additions to several campuses Two other new facilities have also been constructed to accommodate the growth in the area.  The district’s third new school, Goose Creek Memorial High School, will open for the 2008-09.  The new Sterling field house is scheduled for substantial completion in December 2007, and the district will renovate the current athletic areas for use by the fine arts department.  In addition to these projects, the bond issue provided for a 15th elementary school, improvements at Stallworth Stadium and other support facilities, purchase of additional/replacement school buses, construction of an agri-science facility, and district-wide technology advancements.

As a result of students’ successful performance on the state-mandated Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills test, 12 GCCISD campuses earned “Recognized” ratings from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) in 2007.  In addition, 17 schools and the district as a whole earned 2006 Gold Performance Acknowledgments from TEA for high performance in areas other than those used to determine accountability ratings.  Acknowledgments are given in areas such as attendance rate, commended performance by subject area, and comparable improvement in English/language arts or mathematics.  Goose Creek CISD and its students have earned numerous honors at the state and national level.  In the December 2006 issue of Texas Monthly, Cedar Bayou and Highlands junior schools and De Zavala Elementary School were listed among “The Best Public Schools” in the state, based on data from the National Center for Educational Accountability.

GCCISD teachers are devoted to helping students succeed, and special programs are designed to help students make the most of their potential.  The district’s extensive pre-Advanced Placement (AP) and AP programs give students the opportunity to take college-level coursework while in high school and earn college credit through successful completion of the AP exam.  In 2006, 41 GCCISD students or recent graduates were named AP Scholars in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP exams, ranking among the top 18 percent in the nation to merit such recognition.  High achieving students are recognized through programs such as the Duke University Talent Search.   through which seventh graders take the Scholastic Aptitude Test traditionally taken by high school students prior to college entry.  This year, 18 Goose Creek students were honored for scoring 510 or higher on the math and/or verbal portions of the SAT.

Approximately 5 to 7 percent of the district’s students are served by the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program with nominations of new students accepted each year.  Bilingual education programs are also provided for students who have limited English proficiency.

GCCISD’s special education program serves approximately 2,000 students from ages three to 21.  The district also serves as fiscal agent and program administrator for the East Harris County Cooperative for Deaf Education, which serves students nine area school districts and a similar cooperative program for visually handicapped children.
