Galena Park ISD is the largest school district located solely within the boundaries of the North Channel area. The district has a current enrollment of more than 21,000 students on 23 campuses and employs approximately 3,000 people.
The mission of the district is to prepare students to become productive citizens and lifelong learners and Galena Park ISD is now focusing on "Destination Graduation" - a district-wide focus that challenges students to begin thinking about high school graduation at an early age.
In addition to the gains that students made in the science, math, reading and writing portions of the TAKS exam, the number of campuses earning “Exemplary” or “Recognized” ratings improved as well. Jacinto City Elementary, MacArthur Elementary and Tice Elementary achieved the status of “Exemplary” according to the state's accountability rating system. In addition to the three exemplary campuses, eight Galena Park ISD schools were rated as “Recognized” and all others were rated as “Acceptable”. Recognized campuses include Freedom Elementary, Havard Elementary, Purple Sage Elementary, Pyburn Elementary, Cobb Sixth Grade Campus, Galena Park Middle School, North Shore Middle School and Woodland Acres Middle School. No GPISD campus was rated as “Academically Unacceptable”. The district received an “Acceptable” rating.
Galena Park ISD continues to enjoy tremendous support from the community as voters approved a $120 million bond referendum in 1999 and an $83 million bond referendum in 2005. The 1999 bond package provided funds for the state-of-the-art football stadium, natatorium with an eight-lane competition swimming pool, soccer and softball fields, a FFA and Agricultural Science Facility, and a new Transportation Facility.
The $83 million bond package provided funds for Sam Houston Elementary School that opened for the 2007-2008 school year, as well as a new 10th grade campus, a new Parenting Education Program center, and a new health clinic.
